1890 – Wallace Memorial, Castle Gardens, Lisburn, Co. Antrim
Sir Richard Wallace was a wealthy English art collector, philanthropist and Member of Parliament for Lisburn, from 1873 to 1885. After his death in 1890, the citizens of Lisburn erected a monument to him in Castle Gardens in 1892. “To perpetuate the memory of one whose delight was to do good, and in grateful recognition of his generous interest in the prosperity of this town of which it possesses to many proofs.” It is a tall square in plan Gothic memorial set on a granite plinth with a set of large octagonal steps. There are polished marble columns set at each corner of the memorial with a tall stone pinnacle on top. There is a curious sundial crookedly mounted high on the south-eastern side, curious as it is not correctly delineated for facing in this or any other direction.
