1889 – Temperance Institute, Lisburn, Co. Antrim

Alcohol abuse was a big problem in Lisburn at the end of the 19th century. In response some local people formed the Total Abstinence Society in 1886, and the Lisburn Temperance Institute was formed in 1887. Designed by Young & Mackenzie, the building containing gymnasium, reading room, restaurant, public hall, ladies’ and committee rooms, and caretaker’s residence. Now known as the Bridge Community Centre Building. Grade B Listed. Design illustration published in The Irish Builder, October 1 1890.
