1887 – Hinde Street Methodist Chapel, London

Architect: James Weir

0551

The West London Methodist Mission was established in 1887 under the leadership of Hugh Price Hughes, a leading voice in Methodism and in Non-Conformity, and has a long track record as a Methodist ministry and as a spiritual home for “good works”. Its early days are very much associated with its founder, Price Hughes, a strong supporter of the Temperance Movement. Built to replace an older chapel. the present chapel was built to the designs of James Weir, a Wesleyan architect, opened on 29 September 1887. It has a classical frontage, a high spire and an interior that remains largely unaltered save for removal of the original downstairs pews. It is regarded as Weir’s finest building and is listed, Grade II. The semi-circular gallery and high central pulpit are typical of Methodist preaching chapels of its time.
