1887 – Bandstand, St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin
Architect: James H. Owen, Board of Public Works
The octagonal bandstand was erected by the fundraising efforts of Dublin Metropolitan Police to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee. It was designed by James Higgins Owens, architect in the Board of Public Works and constructed by Musgrave and Co, Ironworks of Belfast. Musgrave & Co also made the bandstand in the hollow at the Phoenix Park, which is dated to 1890. The bandstand was closed to the public in 2021 due to the discovery of structural issues, which made it unsafe for visitors. The cast iron columns had been designed to act as rainwater downpipes, and had become blocked over time, causing them to split with a thaw-freeze cycle. Restored and reopened in 2023.
