Third placed design in architectural competition. Published in The Builder July 17 1886. In 1874, a competition was held for Sunderland Town Hall on a site in Mowbray Park. The design the committee most liked was by Francis (Frank) Caws, but was disqualified for excessive cost. A new design competition for a town hall on Fawcett Street later took place judged by Alfred Waterhouse. Won by Brightwen Binyon, who had worked in Waterhouse’s office.
