1886 – Tropical Ravine House, Botanic Gardens, Belfast
The Victorian Tropical Ravine houses a collection of plants in Temperate and Tropical zones, within the setting of a ravine built into the sloping hillside. First opened in the 1880s and home to some of the world’s oldest plants, it was extended around 1900, before it was closed in 2014 as it was in need of major repairs.
Restored by Hall Black Douglas, and reopened in 2018. The restoration involved major structural and landscaping works throughout the building and its environs, including stabilising the existing superstructure, removing redundant installations and reconstructing interior walkways, paths and planters.
