Sculpture by Thomas Earp, medallions by J.E. Boehm 1880. Public fountain, memorial to Major George Whyte Melville (1821-78), soldier and novelist. Constructed of Red Dumfriesshire ashlar with Dalbeattie granite. Circular basin, 2 tiered quatrefoil basins of diminishing scale set within, and supported on squat columns with foliated capitals; medallions on middle basin and inscription.
