1880s – Robertson Block, Main Street, Winnipeg
A large three storey corner block finished in brick with an elaborate cornice and balustrading above. The Imperial Bank of Canada leased part of the ground floor to Main Street while the remainder of the block was a mix of commercial uses. At some point in time, the Bannatyne facade received some further elaboration in the design. The Farmer’s Advocate and Home Magazine, published between 1866 and 1965, was Canada’s longest running national farm newspaper. Demolished when the Imperial Bank of Canada extended their footprint when they built their palatial building by Darling & Pearson.
The Farmer’s Advocate moved to a building on Donald, now called the Aldous Block. By 1915, the newspaper’s offices were advertised as the corner of Langside and Notre Dame. That year, their fiftieth, their byline boasted that they were older than the Dominion of Canada.
