1878 – King Harman Memorial Clocktower, Kenagh, Co. Longford

Architect: Sir Robert William Edis

0035

Designed by distinguished English architect R.W. Edis, this is his only work in Ireland. The three-stage turret-like clock tower was constructed to commemorate Laurence Harman King-Harman, the local landlord, who died three years previously. The head of King-Harman, who lived near Ballymahon, is in relief on the lower part of the tower, and beneath it is an inscription in which he is described as ‘a good landlord and an upright man’. According to Slater’s Directory (1881), it came in at a cost of over £1,000 with the tower costing £500 and the clock costing £550.
