1878 – Corbally More, Dunmore East, Co. Waterford
Designed by locally-based engineer and architect James Otway with Belfast-based Robert Watt, a substantial house in a Scottish Baronial style, built for Hon. Dudley F. Fortescue. Distinctive features includes a bowed projecting bay having a spire-like roof, and the construction in red sandstone with cut-stone dressings. Also known for a time as Summerville. Destroyed by fire in the 1930s, the house was restored, and later fell into ruin again after a period as an hotel. Now restored and a family home again.
“This house is being built on the site of an old house which was of a somewhat similar size. The material of which the front is built is stone from quarries on the sea shore near the site. The drawings show a sketch of the garden and servants’ entrance. The builders are Messrs. Henry Stweart & Co., Belfast, and Mr. Matthews is clerk of works. The architects are Messrs. Otway & Watt, Belfast and Waterford.
