1880 – The Bank of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia

Architect: Lloyd Tayler & E.W. Wright

After an architectural competition with twenty-seven entrants, the successful design was to be awarded a premium of 150 pounds – and the second 75 pounds – and architects were told that “the facades should be boldly treated to be carried out in freestone and not dependent for effect on the elaboration of details”. The design of E.W. Wright, a former Mayor of Adelaide and architect of the Town Hall and the GPO, was chosen. Costing 24,000 pounds, by the beginning of October 1880, the bank was conducting business from the new premises although the manager decided to not take up residence in the suite provided over the public office. Later extended in a similar style on one façade.
