Architect: George Anderson Lawton

After the Duke of Wellington’s death in 1852, in common with other cities across Britain and Ireland, Liverpool decided to erect a monument to celebrate his achievements. The architect from Edinburgh was selected after an architectural competition. The design of the column and plinth closely resembles that of the Melville Monument commemorating Henry Dundas, Lord Melville in St Andrew Square, Edinburgh. Due to delays in selecting a site and funding, it was 1865 before it was completed.
