1872 – St. Matthews Church of Ireland, Shankill Road, Belfast

Architect: Welland & Gillespie

0001

Unique design with round tower belfry and unusual plan. Cruciform in shape, both transepts and the sanctuary have semi-circular endings, in plan giving it an almost shamrock shape. Designed in a Celtic Revival Church by Welland & Gillespie and finished externally in brick of different colours. In 1922 a new pulpit, prayer desk and sanctuary panelling were added as a war memorial to those who died during the First World War. The pulpit has three brass tablets listing the dead.
