1872 – St. Kevin’s Church, Harrington Street, Dublin
Pugin & Ashlin were declared winners of a limited competition between themselves and W.F. Caldbeck held in 1868. Dedicated St Kevin’s Day, 3 June 1872, by Cardinal Cullen, to serve the Roman Catholic parish of St. Kevin, which had been split from St. Catherine’s of Meath Street in 1855.
The exterior is discrete, set back from the property line with many small pinnacles instead of a soaring spire. But the interior, the interior is a riot of decorative schemes – evidence exists of an original colour scheme. Quite busy during the day, with parishioners wandering in for some contemplation, it is a wonderfully peaceful interior. There are interior fittings including most of the stained-glass windows by Early and Powells of nearby Camden St. The interior is mostly intact, with cast iron pews, altar railings, and the pulpit. The church is flanked by its Presbytery in Heytesbury Street and Synge Street CBS school in Synge St.
