In May 1870, John Henry Foley’s statue of the former viceroy the Earl of Carlisle (1802-1864) was unveiled in the People’s Garden, Phoenix Park, Dublin. Howard had served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland between 1855-1858 and 1859-1864, and had donated towards the setting up of the People’s Garden. The statue was damaged in an explosion in July 1958 which removed it entirely from the base, and now just the plinth remains. The statue is now at Castle Howard in Yorkshire
