1868 – Old Post Office, Halifax, Nova Scotia
Architect: David Stirling
In 1863, the Nova Scotia Legislature decided to erect a building to house the Post Office, Customs House and Railway Department, as these institutions had vital roles in the economy of nineteenth century Nova Scotia. After Confederation these became federal responsibilities, and in 1871, the building was taken over by the Federal government. The design is modeled after the fifteenth and sixteenth century Italian palazzos built in Nova Scotia sandstone. Now the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
