1865 – Gatehouse, Iveagh Gardens, Dublin
Picturesque yet substantial gatehouse to the park entrance at Clonmell Place. The Iveagh Gardens are among the finest and until recently least known of Dublin’s parks and gardens. They were designed by Ninian Niven (1799-1879), the principal garden designer of the Victorian age in Ireland, in 1865, as an intermediate design between the ‘French Formal’ and the ‘English Landscape’ styles. A major part of Niven’s work consisted of laying out parks for public use such as the People’s Park in Phoenix Park, Monkstown Public Park, and the park for the Dublin International Exhibition of 1863 on this site.
