1859 – Monkstown House, Monkstown, Co. Dublin

Architect: Carmichael & Jones / Charles H. Ashworth

2603

Monkstown House was designed by Carmichael & Jones for William Harvey Pim in an Italianate style. Carmichael & Jones was a practice of Hugh Carmichael and Alfred G. Jones from 1854 until the death of Carmichael in 1860. Jones continued to practice in Ireland for many years after. During World War I private individuals offered their houses for use as auxiliary hospitals or homes for disabled servicemen. The Liverpool-born architect Charles H. Ashworth drew up the plans for conversion of Monkstown House into a private auxiliary hospital in 1914, including the addition of the elaborate tower. Monkstown House continued in use as a hospital for many years. Now a Montessori school.
