1859 – Cornagilta School, Tydavnet, Co. Monaghan

Neo-Gothic schoolhouse, built along with a teacher’s house for Miss Gertrude Rose of Mullaghmore House. A perspective view of the school, drawn and engraved by Palgrave in 1860 and entitled ‘School, Monaghan, Ireland’ is in the British Museum (printed in mirror image). Windows with similar stonework to the porch exist in a gatehouse on the Rose estate.

“The Cornagilta National Agricultural School, Co. Monaghan is attended chiefly by the children of small farmers. The district is populous. There is great need for improvement in the agricultural practices oi the farmers. The population embraces several religious denominations. The radius of 5 miles from the school includes parts of the estates of several proprietors. The school is on the estate of Miss Rose of Mullaghmore Monaghan.” The Country Gentleman’s Magazine
