1843 – Church of The Assumption, Callan, Co. Kilkenny

callan-church

Constructed 1816-43, by an unknown architect, but sometimes credited to John B. Keane. Described by Lewis in 1837 “The chapel at Callan is a spacious edifice, not quite finished, in the southern part of the town; the interior is very neat, and the ceiling is chastely and handsomely carved.” A stern classical exercise, it has Ionic columns on the west front with an unusual tower and distinctive spire. The building is fronted by twin gateways which complement the church itself, lending the whole a very formal air. Known locally as ‘The Big Chapel’ because of its associations with a local schism in the 19th century. The interior is well preserved.
