With accommodation for 900, and costing £7807, Monaghan Union was completed in April 1842 with its first admissions a month later on May 25 1842. Later 1847 additions to accommodate a further 300 people. Largely gone except for the seven-bay two-storey entrance block which is similar in appearance to the now demolished two-storey ranges with dormers (seen in background of photograph above, entrance block to the left).
