1817 – Wellington Monument, Trim, Co. Meath

A 23-metre-tall Corinthian column on a panelled pedestal by local architect James Bell, surmounted by statue of the Duke of Wellington sculpted by Thomas Kirk. The inscription reads: ‘This column erected in the year MDCCCXVII in honour of the illustrious Duke of Wellington by the grateful of the County Meath’. Arthur Wellesley, later to become the Duke of Wellington, was born on Merrion Street in Dublin City and spent his early formative years in Trim, County Meath. The monument was erected on this site as Wellington resided nearby while MP for Trim. The sculptor Thomas Kirk also executed the statue of Nelson for Nelson’s Pillar in Dublin.
