1779 – Castle ffrench, Ahascragh, Co. Galway
This current house replaced a late 17th century house on a different site on the estate, which replaced a castle built by the ffrench family when they acquired the estate in the late 16th century. Built for Sir Charles ffrench, a mayor of Galway
.
A late eighteenth-century house is the archetypal large single block, three-storey to the front and four to the rear with a yard of outbuildings. Finished in ashlar limestone on front and side elevations with pilasters with stepped tops surmounted by urns, all above moulded cornice. A shallow breakfront with classical detailed doorway elaborates the main façade.
In the early 19th century, the 2nd Lord ffrench suffered a severe financial loss after his finances were destroyed by his bank manager, and afterwards during the Famine, the 3rd Lord ffrench refused to collect rents from his tenants. The result was the family selling up in 1848. They made a comeback when the parents of the 7th Lord ffrench repurchased the Estate in 1919 and they remained in possession until the late 20th century, when they once again sold it.
