The town hall located at the junction of Market Street and Main Street – a building which was being rebuilt in 1766. Originally an arcaded ground-floor to be used as a market house with meeting rooms above. In an extensive renovation of 1904, a four-stage tower was added. The alterations were possibly by William Stuart, the borough surveyor for Strabane, and were expensive and therefore controversial with the people of the town. On the 24 February 1972, the IRA destroyed Strabane Town Hall when 12 armed terrorists brought in bombs and petrol, holding staff hostage initially, before setting fire to the building.
