Mercer's Hospital
1759 – Former Mercer’s Hospital, Dublin
Former hospital that was originally founded 1734. On 13th April 1742, the world premiere of Handel’s Messiah was held in Fishamble Street to raise funds for the hospital. It was rebuilt in 1759 and substantially extended during the late nineteenth century. Late 20th century demolition of the interiors.
Described by Lewis in 1813 as “Mercer’s Hospital, founded in 1734 by Mrs. Mary Mercer, is a large stone building, situated between Mercer-street and Stephen-street, containing 55 beds. A theatre for operations was added to it in 1831.”
