1733 – Desart Court, Callan, Co. Kilkenny
A Palladian house of two storeys over a basement, joined to two two-storey wings by curved sweeps from around 1733, and attributed to Edward Lovett Pearce. The centre block had a seven-bay front, its main feature being four superimposed, engaged, Doric and Ionic columns and Doric entablature. Inside there were elaborate plasterwork ceilings and notable staircases described as “handsome carved scroll-work in oak, in lieu of balusters”. Burnt out 22 February 1923, it was rebuilt by Richard Orpen, appeared for sale in The Kilkenny People in 1934. During the Second World War, or The Emergency, as it was officially known in Ireland, Irish army troops were billeted there, before finally being demolished in 1957.
