1383 – Església de Santa Maria del Mar, Barcelona
Buried in the small streets of the Bari Gotic, the Església de Santa Maria del Mar is one of the most important buildings in the Catalan Gothic style. An austere exterior, the decoration is kept to the two main doorways.
The interior of the church is beautiful in its austerity and simplicity. The plain stonework of the apse with its many windows and columns acts like a beacon contrasting with the darkness of the nave. Like the Església de Betlem, its interior was gutted during the Spanish Civil War, but the removal of the stalls and screens only increases the interior’s beauty and simplicity.
