SOME 1,300 jobs will be created when a new multi-million euro shopping complex opens in Waterford in three years' time. A further 600 people will be employed during the construction stage.

An Bord Pleanala yesterday approved plans for the €280m Newgate Centre, which will be built on a 5.1-acre site bordering Michael Street, New Street, Stephen Street and Brown's Lane in the centre of the city.

The development is not without controversy. Waterford City Council approved the scheme in July last year, but the decision was appealed by local residents, the Waterford Council of Trade Unions and the Waterford Alliance of Sustainable Inner City Development, which expressed concerns about height, overshadowing and traffic in the city centre.

But yesterday, An Bord Pleanala approved the scheme and developers KRM Construction Partnership said that work will begin in the second half of next year, with 600 jobs created during construction. Another 1,300 jobs will be created when the centre opens in 2011.

The ambitious scheme will include more than 50 retail outlets; a 107-bed, four-star hotel with a substantial conference centre and leisure facilities; arts, cultural and community facilities; and underground parking for over 600 vehicles.

Another 28 homes are also included, with a rooftop viewing area.

KRM is made up of Dan Kickham of the Enniscorthy-based DKG Group and Ciaran Redmond of Bunclody-based Redmond Civil Engineering (RCE).

Seeing as they plan for two underground car parks along the border with the old medieval town walls (inside them) surely they'll be held up for years with archaeology?

I have heard that councils are looking forward to more archaeology digs and conservation projects, now that there is a general slowdown on commercial projects.

I'll buy myself a shovel!:D
