Dublin Docklands Development Authority

Over the past year, the Dublin Docklands Development Authority and Geranger Ltd (*) have been in ongoing discussions regarding the advancement of the U2 Tower as a major project for Dublin Docklands and significant progress has been made. However, the Docklands Authority have now decided to suspend negotiations regarding the development for up to twelve months to allow for an improvement in the current uncertainty surrounding the property and financial markets.

Geranger was selected as the provisional preferred bidder to design, construct and finance the U2 Tower and Britain Quay Building late last year. However, intervening market events have understandably made progress more difficult.

The Docklands Authority continues to have full confidence in this landmark project for an inspirational U2 Tower building, which is an important element in the Master Plan for the area.

The objective is to see this landmark project completed. However, given the current unfavourable economic environment, more time is needed at this juncture. The Docklands Authority will review all of its options on an on-going basis.

The Authority is confident that these economic uncertainties are short to medium term and that the Docklands will continue to be a vibrant and positive regeneration project for the city of Dublin.

Since its inception in 1997, the Authority has overseen the development of a world class 520-acre economic hub in the Dublin Docklands and which is currently employing 40,000 people. The Authority looks forward to developing a positive future for all those organisations and people, who live and work in, and visit, the Docklands.

Definitely the original - the additional height allowed the Foster proposal could have made this economically viable and a really elegant addition to the skyline.

Not sure about the lower portion to the left in that image though.

They're both just over-egged exercises in eg(g)o-massaging; if you think the architecture's crap, just give it a little twist, or dramatic lighting. Whatever happened to classic skyscraper design? Or is Bono seeing it all through rose-tinted glasses? (Ouch!)

The Dublin Docklands Development Authority wants to raise the height of the proposed U2 tower to 100 metres, only 20 metres lower than the Spire.

Err no they don't ...Ever see ghostbusters 2 where they do the 7 years later thing at the start and they are driving around the city lamenting the good ole days and wishing they could go back?

Well unfortunately, in this case we don't have any good ole days to look back on. We squandered them. When we examine this proposal and the infighting between politicians, developers, planning authorities and the media hype we see everything that is bad about this country and nothing that is good. This proposal was made up 10 years ago and all that has occured in between was infighting and design after redesign, farcical and a sham. Landmark tower my ass.

But then we shouldn't be surprised because much of the actions of these people i.e. politicians, top level bankers, developers and supposed upholders of the law is coming under closer scrutiny as we suffer an economic collapse. What we missed and didn't pay attention to during the boom years now just frustrates us as we realise the mismanagement that has occured and the lies spun. A web of deceit. To have Given them the benefit of the doubt is what was the mistake. Heres hoping we can give them a good black eye on their way out...all of them

I love NY, but New York is what t is. If Canary Wharf is your thing then go THERE, but it is certinally not a vision I would welcome for Dublin.
