1938 Empire Exhibition
Furhter to my earlier post of 24 August of Tate's Tower, here are some more posts of the 1938 Empire Exhibition (from empireexhibition1938.co.uk). It's worth noting that (a) this was a huge site - c.150 acres - with a masterplan, (b) there was a resolute 'modernist' design aesthetic, in my view based firmly on the classical language of architecture and (c) under the guidance of Tate, young architects were allowed to use their (considerable) design talents. Note that high-rise is used for emphasis and punctuation, with not a slab-block in sight, and that they were afraid of neither decoration nor the use of colour for emphasis. All the bright young things should note that it's all been done before (only better).
