The result of an architectural competition held by the Belfast & Co. Down Railway Co. in 1895, and adjudicated by Alfred Waterhouse. The competition was won by James J. Farrall with Young & Mackenzie. Designed to embrace the seaviews, the Slieve Donard Hotel was once the epitome of the Victorian Hotel with its balconies, dormers and seven storey tower, at a cost of £80,000. Sadly the original interiors are no more, but the external detailing can still be appreciated.
