How to find Work Experience??

Howdy Archipeople!

Does anyone have any advice for someone trying to find some kind of work experince in an Architects practice? I am thinking about becoming one of your clan but want to make super super sure it's the right thing for me to do. I already have a degree in FIne Art (I know I'm a little degree greedy) which is of course utterly useless in finding a real job, hence the change.
Should I phone or write or how would I go about it?
I'm a little confused as to why a busy architect would offer their time to help a completely unexperienced person out in the first place?
Should I only approach practices over a certain size? Ones involved in the area I'm interested in, ie. Eco-Architecture?
