The G Hotel

Following on from a different post - have scanned some images from Image Interiors of the interiors of the Philip Treacy/Douglas Wallace designed G Hotel in Galway. The exterior belies the interior - and location could be a bit of a drawback, but....pretty cool nonetheless.

The first image looks like what Julian Clary would live in. LOL. That hotel is very different I can tell you. Cool all the same though and nice images. Well done.

That hotel is absolutely brilliant. So kitsch, so OTT, so camp! Bout time we had a little fun with architecture and interior design in Ireland. Fair play to Phillip Treacy, there is more to him than just his extraordinary milliner talents .

I totally agree! The colours are a refreshing change from the browns and blacks and creams and beiges etc etc

Agreed, I love the OTT nature of 5-star The G - I think Edward Holdings, Douglas Wallace and Phillip Treacy just let a rip on this one and it will certainly be a nice addition and perhaps a nice departure from what we have commonly come to expect from hotels in Ireland. The D in Drogheda (as part of Scotch Hall) is the sister hotel also operated by Edward Holdings/Monogram Hotels. The company have plans, as I understand it, to develop another few additions.

when you look at the image closer they do look a bit like seats. it is so ott and that makes me like it.

They're certainly getting a huge amount of press at the moment - but as for visionary,.....

The hotel is certainly unique - nowhere like it in Europe at present, let alone the UK and Ireland but you only have to look at the second phase of that scheme in Drogheda, see another post - the new tower redesign leaves alot to be desired! I think the shopping centre is open up there already - judging from piece in yesterday's Tribune.

That said they do seem to have a positive relationship - isn't there an interesting residential scheme they're doing in Dublin on site?

Yeah i think it is in Donnybrook (?) - I remember hearing last year that almost every apartment and house on the site were bought straight from plans. No bad going considering they were all in the millions price-wise.
I have a nephew in Drogheda who was in Scotch Hall on the day it opened and said that it has been the highlight of their year! Maybe teh planners will be a bit kinder about the proposed tower now..

i hope so. drogheda's revised plan is very off-putting. the colour looks so out of place with the buildings either side.

Agreed - the imagination is certainly there. Some of their schemes I'm not madly wild about but they receive full praise for their co-operative edge and willingness to put new twists on tired ideas. Gerry Barrett, it would seem, is establishing himself as perhaps one of the most culturally aware developers around at the moment, and as a result, is perhaps one of the more exciting.

"visionary,....."

open you eyes, why do too many irish designers go around with their eyes wide shut. this new hotel, the g hotel is hardly what you would call visionary design, maybe a visionary development but only when compared to other irish hotel developments. every major city in europe at this stage has similary hotles, ireland is as ever, when it comes to the world of design, just trying to catch.

The D is quite a nice place - should be staying there in a week or so - nicely designed bar/restaurant which is as far as I've been inside it. The Scotch Hall centre opened the other week and is one of the better designed shopping centres I've been in for a while, nice scale and integrated very well with the buildings that were retained on site. It'll be much better when all the shops & facilities open there but it's gone down exceptionally well in Drogheda. On the Sunday after it opened it had a footfall of 54,000 visitors (which compares to the Pavillions in Swords which is of similar size had a footfall of 20,000 on its first Sunday).

Finally managed to pay the hotel a visit over the Xmas! A bit on the pricey side - but no more than you would expect for a 5*. Anyhoo a couple more pics I took with the trusty camera phone.
