what would you say are skills necessary in becoming a successful architect? Also what could one do in preparing to be an architect? Any suggestions or tips would be helpful...

my lecturer said you can go as far as you want, just know how far you want to go into architecture,read and know as much as you can about history of architecture [...if you know where you are coming from and inspiration blah blah] and don't limit you studies to your region only but stay in touch with the global trendsmost of all EXPLORE!!!!.......

Maybe the proffessionals out there have some thing to say,some great architect who passed away afew months ago must have said that getting the contract was the hardest part.........

From observing the way our firm operates I would like to say that a strong knowledge of the industry itself is important. Knowing the various builders that potentially can build your projects, knowing what companies offer what in terms of design elements (i.e. precast concrete manufacturers), and simple networking all seem to be a very important factor in what determines a business and a successfull business. Any thoughts?

Not really the way it was put, original wasn't just about architecture.

I heard it from Alexandros Tombazis recently. He was describing the difference between engineers and architects. Although he placed the architect in the generalist role and the the engineer in the specialist. Not sure if everyone would agree with him.

Well an architect has to be a specialist in at least one area of his profession. For instance, you can't design buildings without having a specialist and in-depth knowledge of principles of design and many other aspects associated with design.
