start with vitruvius and keep reading. theres no definite "new" approach to architectural design. constantly morphing ideas and ideals mean fluidity is becoming more prevalent in the fashion of design. dont read a book and take it as gospel for anything. look at everything thats being designed and draw your own conclusions.
As a starting point i'd recommend the work of neil leach

also alot of mind bogling books...from philosophers ie Leibniz, Guattari....if you read them, re read them try and incorporate what you have read into something more idealistic or real...alot of architecture is theory and concepts are the basis of design
