Fail! Update!
I turned the forums off yesterday to see if the server fell over without them. However I think the process that was killing the machine was the "related posts" feature on every page of the main site. I've left that off for now to see what happens.

Ok - I dont believe it to be the forums... so back on... think its the thumbnail generator on the main site that provides the indices images....

I've been turning off the forums in an attempt to keep the remainder of the site online.
