Building Information Management to form part of new government work in UK - here too?

This represents something that seems to be another short-sighted strategy, as shown by the huge front-loading of technical information prior to procurement that is ongoing here with the GCCC contract requirements.

The problem is that many government departments cannot even work comfortably withing the information gathering requirements necessary under the old GDLA contracts preferring to wait until the last minute to approve funding and take design decisions which can have far reaching effects on otherwise finished drawings.

All of this work has to be done before the successful tenderer is selected, which seems to suggest that the investment in just tendering for work has multiplied by a factor as opposed to just adding a percentage.

This plays into the hands of so-called project managers who like to run up fees for their own benefits when the substantive issue is about getting a facility built compliantly, on time and under budget.

Endless institutionalised naval gazing doesn't seem to be the best way forward here, where the phrse "fully" considered seems to mean a building is never defined, merely assessed endlessly.

Whither now all those practices in Ireland who invested thousands gearing up for the tendering process only to see the total collapse of capital investment from all the Government departments this year in a disgraceful display of stupidity.

This has occured together with the banks not lending which has resulted in a stunted, jobless recovery that exists on paper only due to the increased exports of our multi-national investors here.

And the show goes on...

This topic "allegedly" came up again at the RIAI annual general meeting this year.

Jaundiced views I have heard since include the suggestion that its a thinly disguised attack on the QS profession.

Really - the very THOUGHT of architects trying to cut out other professions!
