Sutton to Sandycove

Does anyone know what the latest is on the Sutton to Sandycove plan for Dublin Bay? There is a whole web-site for it (http://www.s2s.ie/) but it has not been updated since March 2004. I think it would be great as the cycle paths in place between Clontarf and Sutton are excellent. It seems to have been adopted in theory by the different councils, but now it is a question of actually being built.

I was looking at this again recently i hadn't realised that it involved extending the coast by 10 metres in some sections around sandymount to merrion gates

This seems to be moving ahead and doing so without anyone noticing much: there is a dispute between, of all people the Dublin Cycling Campaign and the East Wall Residents Association about the precise routing of the cycleway though East Wall and about the plans for a new bridge over the Tolka. Does anyone know where any of this is documented, the s2s site itself is very out of date and the council webpages don't seem to contain anything so detailed.

It seems odd to me that the East Wall people would object to something that would route people through the neighbourhood and I am surprised the Dublin Cycling Campaign is championing something that for much of it length segregates cyclists from cars.

It sounds really positive that works are continuing.

The Esat Wall residents have a good track record in objecting first and asking what its in it for us later with just about everything that has ever been proposed down there; different fiscal times these days.

On the Dublin Cycling campaign; they clearly have recognised that nothing is safer than a segregated route; Boris Johnson when asked on a talk show to describe a difficult situation once replied "negotiating Hyde Park Corner on a bicycle" You wouldn't hear any Dutch politician utter a similar remark.

Surprise, surprise, the cycle path proposal ties in with the Dart Underground Railway Order.
Dublin City Council proposed and passed (with little consultation locally) a cycle path along West Road and under a new Rail over road bridge, and on via West Road (West) to cross Sherriff Street, and a little too late the East Wall Residents realized that the new bridge was a ploy to allow for HGVs working on DU to drive through their streets. Since then, they have successfully blocked the linking cycle bridge across the Tolka.
The true coastal cycle path should be along East Wall Road to the O2 and south by the toll bridge.

The new Rail over road bridge would also prevent the successful connection of the Maynooth line to the DART Underground (as proposed).
PVC as usually shoots his mouth off without any research into the subject. so much for ESAT residents .... LOL

The 3 city councils involved have all added it to their development plans.

Here's a question and reply asked last December in DLR council:
Question: Councillor S. Fitzpatrick
“To ask the Manager for an update on the Sutton to Sandycove Cycleway project?”

Reply:
“A second Feasibility and Preliminary Design report on the Sutton to Sandycove Promenade and Cycleway project was commissioned by Dublin City Council some time ago. Officials from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council were on the Steering Committee overseeing the preparation of the Report. While a draft Final Report was submitted to the Steering Committee this draft was not acceptable to our representatives and other members of the Steering Committee. To date it has not been possible to agree a draft of the Final Report acceptable to all members of the Steering Committee.

It is the Council’s view that the S2S project as originally conceived is no longer feasible given environmental concerns raised by the NPWS and that this needs to be reflected in the Final Report.

Dublin City Council have been asked by us to complete a Final Report representing the views of the Steering Committee and make it available for circulation but have not done so to date.”


I guess that the NPWS concerns refer to the Booterstown marsh.

Dublin City Council has an EIS with ABP since June 09 for the 2km Bull Island section.

Dun Laoghaire Council recently proposed a contraflow bike lane through Newtown Avenue, Blackrock, as a coastal bike lane would not be feasible at that point. I think this would lead onto a bike lane on seapoint avenue before veering down to the coast again at Seapoint bathing spot. It would continue along the seafront past Monkstown to Dun Laoghaire.

There is a suggestion for a shortcut bridge from Eastpoint to Clontarf that looks nice to me.

Realistically, I guess we are 10 yrs away from seeing this complete. It would be great amenity for the city both for practical use and for fun so it's a pity that everything else takes priority and that it didn't get more attention during the boom years.

It is disapointing that this project appears somewhat mired; however there must be many sections of the route which can be assisted by looking at traffic light arrangements and allocation of road / path space; one section that always struck me was the Eastlink bridge; foot paths that are rarely used outside concert nights and footpaths that are 8 inches tall beside a road that is too narrow to accomodate a cycle lane. Taking the route down to the sum of its parts and looking at what can be done at little cost should be the way forward; why would one want to deface the coast around Seapoint; other than to protect on street parking revenues for the local authority?
