Perhaps yesterday's 1-0 shock result wasn't such an upset after all ...

CH: Botta, Herzog, de Meuron, Olgiati, Zumthor (coach: Jeanneret)

Both goalkeepers are a bit suspect but the Swiss defenders look more compact as a unit and can also play the ball out from the back, whereas the veteran Spanish pair may be suffering from heavy legs. There's lots of flair and creativity in midfield but you'd sometimes have to wonder about the Spanish link play, which is not as purposeful as we've come to expect. Two superb strikers to watch out for but the crafty Zumthor just shades it for me. The Swiss look resilient, however, and if it comes downs to a tactical battle, the more direct approach of the men from the mountains could well shade it.

I would have thought that the strong centre-back partnership of Herzog & de Meuron would get more of a mention.

The Irish will be cheering on the Mexicans tonight in the match against France. Strong team, too, under captain and centre-forward, Juan O'Gorman. Ricardo Legorreta makes buildings nearly as colourful as the outrageous shirts that former goalkeeper, Jorge Campos, used to wear. Felix Candela, with those wide spans of his, is a one-man defence, allowing the suave Enrique Norten to be partnered in midfield by a brilliant 10, Luis Barragán. Sadly, Tatiana Bilbao, who starred recently on the AAI pitch in Dublin, is relegated to the bench. Coach, Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, is a legend however: author of "4,000 Years of Mexican Architecture", president of the organizing committee of the Mexico City Olympics in 1968 and the World Cup in 1970, IOC architect and honorary member.
