Proposed New Court Complex - Mulgrave Street

Proposed New Court Complex - Mulgrave Street

Limerick Courthouse will relocate to new site behind jail

A NEW court complex is to be built close to Limerick Prison through a public-private partnership but subject to Government funding, the Courts Service has confirmed.

And the office of Chief Justice John Murray – a Limerick native – has also been in touch with Limerick City Council and Mayor Kevin Kiely on relocating the District Court away from City Hall on an interim basis, with three sites shortlisted to temporarily accommodate court business.

Compensation, however, would be required from Limerick City Council to allow the Courts Service fit out the temporary location.

The Limerick Leader understands that the new courthouse is to be located at Costelloe's yard, adjacent to the prison on Mulgrave Street.

So this has finally been confirmed. It's definitely a sensible decision, ideally the new Garda headquarters will be built here aswell. Although its anyone's guess as to when funding will actually be available!

I take that the proposed court complex will house both the District and the Circuit Courts plus their offices?

Out of sight, out of mind!

What a waste of tax payers money, just all because the City Hall won’t face down the “anti social antics” of people attending the District Court which is on their premises!

Henry Street HQ to expand (Limerick Post)

Written by Rebekah Commane

HENRY STREET gardai have been granted an extension.... with the acquisition of the leasehold interest in the adjacent former Eircom premises, and designed to relieve the pressure on their existing building.

It had been indicated two years ago that the Department of Justice had expressed an interest in section of the now Foreign Aid building across the road, and which had been under construction, with a view to providing long sought after additional space for Henry Street garda personnel.

Contracts have now been signed for the red-bricked former Eircom offices, built in the 1970s by local developer Charles Humphreys.

Their new premises, which had been on the market for some time, have five floors of accommodation.

The current premises will be retained.

Inspector John O’Reilly said that, like all garda stations, the building is to be leased, and that a number of departments, along with Garda training quarters, would be transferred there.

“We are expected to be in situ for July of this year”, said the Inspector, confirming there would not be any additional holding cells in their new premises. The cells are to remain at the existing station.

There are around 350 garda personnel in the district, which includes Henry Street, Mayorstone and Mary Street stations.

Plans are also in place to relocate Limerick District Court to a more secure location in the city, and while a Henry Street site had been widely mooted, the likelihood now is that it will be built on a vacant space in Mulgrave Street, and close to the prison.

Given the governments dire financial state of affairs, expanding next door into the former Eircom building is probably a logical one. It will probably be a few years from now before one will see any serious development proposals for this block (former ESB site).

Hmmmm . . . . . . the facade of the former EirCom building had always a lurking feel about it, though I think it will fulfil its future function, as one could imagine the five floors full of control rooms with our 350 garda personnel occupied all day surveillancing footage from the numerous cctv cameras plastered all around the city. Will any of them ever get the chance to go out on the beat?

For those not familiar with the Henry Street Garda Station ;), it’s the building on the right.

According to the Limerick Leader they will be only leasing two of the five floors. Bord-Snip is saving everywhere.

Looks like I let my fantasy get the better of myself, :D they won’t be moving any of their surveillance high-tech into the former communication building.

Instead the garda traffic corps, the in-service training unit and the immigration section will be amongst those who will relocate to the new offices.
