Re: Were there ever proposed replacements to Nelson's Pillar?
A proposed alternative O’Connell Street layout was the main feature of the Millennium Arch scheme 1988
Features included:
• Elimination of central pedestrian reservation
• Rerouted vehicular carriageway – lowered at the Henry Street/North Earl St.
junction to allow a pedestrian overpass
• Incorporation of St. Patrick’s Day Parade viewing platforms
• Relocated and new statues
• Separate bus, taxi and cycle lanes
• New avenue of trees
• Widened footpaths

I remember Gaybo and the Late Late audience bigging up the triumphal arch thing back in 88 - pretty ghastly proposal actually, cuts the street in half and ruins the capel st to Amiens Street vista
