definitive dublin snug guide...

trying to compile a list of bars with snugs this morning over coffee with a non-architect dedicated drinker (NADD)...... can you help compile the list.... intend photographing them all before they disappear....

Walshes, Stoneybatter
Ryans, Parkgate Street
Kehoes, Sth Anne Street
O'Neills, Suffolk Street
Fallons, The Coombe
The Gravedigger, Glasnevin

and maybes:
The Palace, Fleet Street (I seem to remember that there is a very small snug at the end of the bar as you walk in the doors)
Lord Edward, Christchurch Place (the NADD seemed to think there was a heavily curtained off area in the bar)
Hanlons, NCR (I think I remember one, not certain as I've only been there once)
Does Slattery's in Rathmines?
Does Toner's on Baggot Street?

Front snug of Mc Dowell’s, Emmet Road, Inchicore right next door to St. Patrick’s Athletic.

Front snug /wee-room of The Glen of Atherlow, Emmet Road, Inchicore right opposite the old VEC now PLC college as designed by a young Andrew Devane(the college that is).

The back snug of the Royal Oak on Old Kilmainham Lane near the Garda station.

Ryans of queen street
quite large-immediately to the right as you enter from queen street

Slattery's in rathmines had a corridor behind the bar that passed as a snug (with hatch to bar)

Toners has (or did, have not been in it for a while)

Doheny & nesbitts had one too at the end of the bar

Seem to remember that kavanaghs at the top of stoneybatter/Aughrim street has a snug

I wouldnt regard Ryans of Queen Street as intact, the whole wooden partition has been removed so its part of the pub proper now.

slatterys in rathmines has the the snug proper inside the front door, it also has ,as mentioned above the dark corridor at the back of the bar where the old timers can be seen sitting without conversation looking at the wall 1.0m in front of them. another interesting point is that the bar inside the front door has small stools at it, as the floor level benind the bar is much lower that on the public side ! great pub.

Are any of these snugs still used as snugs, that is, still reserved for women. That was certainly true of garavans until recently.

ps shop street runs from eyre square to murrays off-licence, don't believe anyone who tells you different.

Paul - did you ever photograph these snug areas? I'm familiar with them all apart from the 2 in Inchicore - must go up and have a luck.

There's one in the Hairy Lemon - completely separated fro bar with huge window to look at the passers by (not a great pub though and way too dear).

Of course the mother of all snug bars is the Crown in Belfast where all seating is in snugs, apart from the bar stools - must be around 10 snugs there.

a very small bar completely seperate from the main public bar, usually served through a hatch with an entrance off the main enterance and bench rather than bar stool seating, originally intendend for women at a time when they weren't welcome in the main bar.
