Transportation System In Dublin

Whats the story? Has the interconnentor been approved? Dublin is in a serious need of more transport because the city is struggling with traffic.

-There must be a transport map for users of rail, bus etc.
-The Interconnector must be built
-Dublin Airport has to be connected with city center
-There has to be a revamp of present ticketing system
-Intercity services have to be improved, with more trains running and a vaster network-especially North West
-Cork must get commuting rail services

Regarding your question, I don't think anyone can answer that with any certainty but it would appear that the interconnector has overtaken the RPA Dublin Airport 'Metro' as the number one priority in Dublin rail transport infrastructure.

Why must IR's dick extension be built? Use the Phoenix Park Tunnel. Of course, I'm sure someone in the know has property along the route of the Interconnector and stands to make a mint from the taxpayer's "investment".

DART along the Kildare Line through the tunnel, Cabra and back to Connolly would be a far cheaper option and better use of the State's resources.

And where are the trains to go then? Connolly is at capacity, so for every train you bring in there via the tunnel you're going to have to drop an enterprise, northern DART or Drogheda/Dundalk train. Besides the enterprise, people can't even get standing room on these services. The interconnector is a brilliant idea; I can't wait for the day when you can get a DART to Stephen's Green from Maynooth, Kildare, Drogheda or Bray, which I suspect would be a more useful and popular destination for many than Cabra.

I would have thought that the metro would be more important addition rather than the interconnector. Dublin is the leading capital in Europe but initial impressions of the city are always going to be tainted when they discover that there are no tube or underground service serving the city centre but have to avail of a double deck Bus. I hoped it is done before the inevitable bust comes.

Just because Irish Rail have a significant interest in the Spencer Dock site does not mean that the interconnector shouldn't be built. As Jimg has stated Connolly is already at capacity and could not handle the volume produced by a four-tracked Kildare line. The interconnector also serves areas of Dublin that despite being some of the most intensively used areas in the City have never had a passenger rail service such as High St/Christchurch, St Stephens Green/Grafton St and Spencer Dock. This proposal is also the only one on the table that effectively integrates Luas and Dart as well as linking both divergent IR systems.

Let's hope all future transport initiatives are thought through... why not outsource to someone such as sncf with a great record of success in terms of public transport.

Even more bizarre when you think about the size of many European Cities that have fully integrated transport systems that include an underground. It is not only Dublin that needs investment in additional rail lines but if the RPA over-spend on Luas was repeated nothing else will happen for a very very long time.

pity im not living in dublin at the moment im in rome. i personally think that the interconnector is better than the metro because it serves a much vaster area and is ceaper but from an estetic point of view the metro is better it obviously sounds better than a suburban train.

Does anyone have a map of the Connolly to Housten line running under the park?

Most of the online maps have it; here it is on a google's map feature, for example. This map doesn't make it clear that the line goes under the park but I like google's interface; the map scrolls quickly (just drag or double click on the map). You'll notice that the line doesn't actually go from Heuston - it branches off further out from the station. Apparently there will be suburban trains using the line whenever Spensor Dock station is finished (in a year or so?) but they wont terminate in Connolly because of the capacity constraints. Instead they'll go to Spensor Dock station.

Sure but I'm not sure it would be a reason to choose that course over another. €1000, while it might improve your social life for a few months is only really a fraction of the total cost of your studies.

It says a lot about this country that logistics are considered a higher priority than moving people and at 305 points it would appear that moving goods is not considered too important either.
