Dublin visits

Penny Lewis, the editor of Prospect Magazine, Scotland's top architecture Magazine will be visiting Dublin this weekend for the RIBA Conference.

She asked me to list what I would consider to be the most interesting but out of the way buildings... of the beaten track so to speak, so no point listing the spike, for example because you can't miss it.

I have said:

I've only ever seen that in the mags Andrew...it looks very good indeed right enough but I did'nt know how far out it would be, in truth

It's fairly close to the Airport , perhaps 2 miles north on the main street in Swords.

A quick courtesy call on the way in to town from the airport would add maybe 30 minutes to the journey, more if you hopped out for a closer look.

Marrowbone Lane - community centre by Henchion Reuter and Foyer by Brady Mallalieu, within 200 yards of each other
Calatrava's Liffey bridge at Usher's Island
Balgaddy A housing scheme in Clondalkin by Howley Harrington

2 'secret treasures' to complete a worthy dozen:
de Blacam & Meagher's 'handed' recreation of Loos's American Bar (Vienna) on the first floor of Trinity's Dining Hall (you must be invited by a Fellow of the College) (1987)
O'Donnell + Tuomey's press room / reception centre, tucked away in the north-west corner of Dail Eireann, Kildare Street (you normally must be invited by a TD (Irish MP) to get in) (2002)

Can't argue with the five classics Trace, particularly Sam Stephenson's Institute for Advanced Studies. The last time Penny visited Dublin though I think it was ten years ago, so it's the recent stuff she is interested in.

What about Leinster House, the new work by O'Donnell Toumey?

Small but according to the AAI Awards Assessors " very beautiful" is it accessible?

Sorry for causing confusion, aland, by using the project's Irish form: ODT's work at Leinster House is actually the final project I listed (Dail Eireann, pronounced something like 'Doll Air-run'). It's well worth trying to blag your way in past security or nobble a passing TD who's got a few minutes to spare. Pretty miniscule compared to EMBT's Hollyrood, though!

No need to seek it out, as it's the venue for the end-of-conference party on Saturday evening! It's got great scale but fiddly (shoddy) details...

How about The Helix? Or is that too far across the Liffey? I have to disagree with Swords being too far to go to see Fingal County Hall - five fecking minutes from the airport?!
Also, I think Ballymun is worth a look, if only for the scale of what's being done.

The Helix is terrible architecturally and not worth crossing the road to see - the main entrance foyer is like something from a tacky cruise liner...
