Work being done on Christ Church building/grounds?
Does anyone know what work is being carried out on the Christ Church building on South Main St.? I'm not sure if it's the building itself, or just the grounds being altered. They seem to be knocking some of the wall between the grounds and the laneway that divides it and Bishop Lucey Park.
I couldn't find the planning application yet.
It's a lovely building/setting; just a pity the laneway next to it seems to be such a problem.

as far as i know, the Christchurch building is being converted to a performance venue for use by the triskel arts centre. It was being used as an archive/storage for CCC, but when the triskel opened where they did it was on the agreement that they would eventually be able to expand into the Christchurch building. the back of the current building is now being linked to the church by a glass corridor i think, and while the construction is taking place much of the triskel operations are being held in a redundant ESB hub building opposite Scoozi's near the back of Brown Thomas. the lane walls have been dismantled for access reasons, but the stones have been numbered and will eventually be replaced as they were

That sounds excellent, thanks Yossarian. Hope they do a good job on it.
(Incidentally, that ESB building is nicely quirky too; and in a great location. I'm surprised it hasn't been used more permanently).

That's the plan alright. However I believe they are incorporating the laneway into the park itself. so Bishop Lucey will expand slightly. Probably not a bad idea really. Laneway serves little purpose and is a bit dark and dodgy.
It should be a great concert venue when it's finished.

Yip think it is being incorporated into the park alright, had been blocked for a good while and was becoming a bit of a dodgy spot so good idea.

will the old church grounds become public park as well then? if so, that'd be a great move.

Excellent website for this development, including a nice image gallery here:

Don't totally agree with incorporating Christchurch Lane into Bishop Lucey Park, but I can see the argument for it. Hopefully, hard landscaping here will emphasise the location of this historic laneway.
The grounds of Christchurch won't be opened up to the park. Apart form obvious security reasons, removing the wall would damage the setting of the building.
All going well, I believe they are talking about a mid-April opening for the new venue.

For anyone interested in the history of the building there are now tours available during the week. It's an amazing place to walk around.
