This map is a first pass attempt to show commuter-ville – Areas of the country where large proportions of the population drive long distances to work. As can be seen, areas near large towns have fewer long distance commuters than more isolated areas, which is fully expected. Nevertheless there are some areas; North county Dublin, parts of county Meath and Northern Kildare in particular, where a significantly larger than average proportion of the population was commuting over 15km to work in 2006, despite these areas containing large towns and villages.

I expect the more than 15km to work doesn't do it justice.

Look at the line up from Wexford, from places where people commute to Dublin and have been doing so since the early nineties.

The dark blue areas around the larger cities define both the draw of those areas and the places where oneoff houses have been built within easy access.

Paul Keogh, current president of the RIAI, referred critically to people who think they are building carbon neutral or passive houses in rural areas, conveniently forgetting about all the commuting that hugely inflates their lifestyle carbon footprint.
