The basement would be under the extension part of the ground floor (i.e. not going under the existing part of the house) If possible it could go under the patio beyond the new extended ground floor. Any thoughts/ideas on this? Anyone done this before? We have no side access by the way. We will be doing a first and ground floor extension and attic conversion also - I know the basement will be pricey but that is not an issue (well to a certain extent)

Why do more people not do this?

generally.. the costs are uneconomical.

you need to look at underpinning existing foundations, full internal tanking detailing, precisely engineered retaining walls..... the risks to neighbouring properties are very real and need to be assessed and designed out.
