Not too long ago, just before asphalt roads and the cars roaming on them began invading the earth, waterways were much safer and faster than highways are today. Waters determined the ways in which cities geographically spread and belonged to complex patterns molded by seas, lakes, gulfs, canals and rivers. The East and the West of the Mediterranean, the Aegean Coast, Marmara Sea, and Tuna River are but a few examples of these patterns that had the power to define cultural climates of their own.
