Twain house plans upset environmentalists

Environmentalists calling for tenure review before Shania Twain's plans for multi-million dollar mansion near Wanaka go any further

17 May 2005

Environmentalists say Shania Twain's Wanaka house plans should not be given the green light, until the land has undergone a tenure review.

The country music superstar bought 25,000 hectares of crown pastoral leasehold land last year.

She has applied for consent to build a multi-million dollar house on the high country station.

Upper Clutha Environmental Society president Julian Haworth says without a tenure review, it is impossible to know the effects of the development.

He says consenting to the site would set a precedent, allowing other wealthy people to build mansions in areas classed as outstanding natural landscape.

A planner has recommended the Queenstown Lakes Council reject the house site, because it does not fit in with the environment.
