Lisbon's Casino Designed by Gehry

Postby Rita Ochoa » Thu Feb 27, 2003 12:41 pm

«Too good to be true!» it's what Mr. Gehry said when he received the invitation to design a casino, 2 theatres, shoping and office complex on Lisbon's downtown, to be ready in 2008.

The main goal is the renovation of Lisbon's theatre discrict "Parque Mayer". The Parque Mayer theater district, inaugurated in 1922, was once famous for its comic musicals but fell into decline in the 1980s.

Lisbon City Hall wants to build two modern theaters, a film complex, museum, stores and offices on the 21,530-square-yard site off one of the city's main avenues. As for the casino, a lot of people is now fighting against its construction, saying we already have 1 of the biggest ones in Europe just outside the city (in Cascais)... and thats enough for turism, corruption and crime... Will the Casino here win ?

I know F. gehry is going to visit our country in middle March to present his project. Ive been trying to get some information about it but I can't find a thing! I also here rumours about the project saying it's going to be mainly underground.. Does anyone knows anything more about it ?

Gehry will be in Portugal in the 9th of March, to meet with the Mayor

I think that there should be a publica presentation to the city of the project before starting building it
